Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question," — Matthew 22:41 (ASV)
While the Pharisees were gathered together—St. Mark and St. Luke add here, as St. Matthew does in Matthew 22:46, that “no man dared ask Him any more questions.” From this time on, they resorted to different kinds of tactics, turning to treachery and false witness.
It was now His turn to be the questioner and to convict the Pharisees of having only a superficial understanding of the very predictions they quoted most frequently and confidently as Messianic.
