Charles Ellicott Commentary
"saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, [The son] of David." — Matthew 22:42 (ASV)
The son of David—Both the question and answer gain fresh significance from the fact that the name had been so recently uttered in the Hosannas of the multitude (Matthew 21:9; Matthew 21:15). The Pharisees are ready at once with the traditional answer, but they have never asked themselves whether it conveyed the whole truth, or how it could be reconciled with the language of predictions that were undeniably Messianic.
