Charles Ellicott Commentary
"But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city." — Matthew 22:7 (ASV)
He sent forth his armies — As in other parables that foreshadow the judgment of the Son of Man, these words find an approximate fulfillment, first, in the destruction of Jerusalem, and afterward, in all times of trouble that fall upon nations and churches as the punishment for unbelief and its consequent unrighteousness. The word “armies” in its modern use suggests action on a larger scale than that indicated by the Greek. A better word is troops.
