Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers." — Matthew 23:32 (ASV)
Fill you up then... — The English translation fails to capture the pathetic abruptness of the original: And you—fill you up the measure of your fathers. The implied thought is the one found in Genesis 15:16, and the history of the world offers all too many illustrations of it.
Each generation, as it passes, adds something to the ever-accumulating mass of evil. At last, the penalty falls, as though the long-suffering of God had been waiting until the appointed limit had been reached and the measure of iniquity was finally full.
