SCRIPTURE

"Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:" — Matthew 23:34 (ASV)

Behold, I send unto you prophets — In the parallel passage of Luke 11:49, these words are introduced by the statement, Therefore said the wisdom of God, which has led some to see in them a quotation from some prophetic writing then current (see note there). The words are, in any case, remarkable as including “scribes” no less than “prophets” among the ministers of the New Covenant (see note on Matthew 13:52).

Shall you scourge in your synagogues — See note on Matthew 10:17.
