"And as [were] the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man." — Matthew 24:37 (ASV)
As the days of Noah were — Here again we note an interesting coincidence with the Epistles of St. Peter. Both of his letters, more than any other portion of the New Testament, teem with references to the history to which Peter’s mind had been directed by his Master’s teaching (1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5; 2 Peter 3:6).
This is perhaps all the more noticeable because the account of this discourse in St. Mark does not include the reference, nor does the one in St. Luke, which instead substitutes a general call to watchfulness and prayer. It is possible—though all such conjectures are somewhat arbitrary—that these two Evangelists, writing for Gentile Christians, omitted the allusion to a history that was not as familiar to their audience as it was to the Jewish readers of St. Matthew’s Gospel.
