Charles Ellicott Commentary
"And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut." — Matthew 25:10 (ASV)
While they went to buy —These words imply that if they had gone earlier, as the wise virgins, by hypothesis, had done, all would have been well. Their mistake was in not going before. In other words, it is too late to make use of the ordinary means of grace for forming one's character—ordinances, sacraments, and rules of life—at the moment of crisis in a personal or national life, which corresponds to the coming of the bridegroom. The door is then shut and is no longer opened, even for those who knock.
