Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents." — Matthew 25:28 (ASV)
Take therefore the talent from him — The sentence passed on the slothful servant confirms the view that understands the “talents” as the external opportunities given to a person for using their abilities. The abilities themselves cannot be transferred in this way; however, the opportunities can be, and often are—even in the approximate outworking of the law of retribution that we observe on earth. Here on earth, people also give to the one who has, and faithful work is rewarded with openings for work of a higher kind.
Therefore, assuming a law of analogy (if not of direct continuity) is at work behind the veil, we can see in our Lord’s words that one form of penalty for the slothful will be to watch the work that could have been theirs being done by those who were faithful on earth.
