Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." — Matthew 26:64 (ASV)
Thou hast said—The silence was broken, just as they expected. He was indeed what their words implied. More than this, He was also the Son of Man from Daniel’s vision, the Head of an everlasting kingdom (Daniel 7:13).
No words in the Gospels are more decisive against the view of those who wish to see our Lord as only a great moral teacher, like Socrates or Buddha. At the very crisis of His history, when a denial would have saved His life, He asserts His claim to be much more than this—to be all that the most devout Christians have ever believed Him to be.
At such a moment, when people stand face to face with apparent failure and death, dreams and delusions usually melt away. Yet here, claims that some have presumed to be delusions were instead strengthened, intensified, and reaffirmed with the calmness of assured conviction.
The right hand of power—The definite article in the Greek can hardly be reproduced in English, but it is important to remember that our Lord speaks of the power—that which belonged preeminently to the Eternal.
