SCRIPTURE

"And when they saw him, they worshipped [him]; but some doubted." — Matthew 28:17 (ASV)

They worshipped him—that is, they fell prostrate at His feet. As has been noted, this act of worship was not new in itself. However, it is certain that the Lord’s appearances after His resurrection made the disciples' faith stronger and clearer , and so the act took on a new significance.

Some doubted—At first, it seems difficult to understand how those who were present in the upper room at Jerusalem (John 20:19–26) could still have doubted. The account in John 21:4, however, sheds some light on this. There was something mysterious and supernatural about the appearance of His glorified body; at first, His form was indistinct and difficult to recognize, but then He was seen just as He had been in life. The more devoted and loving disciples were likely the first to recognize their Lord, as they had been before, while others questioned whether it was a phantom or a reality (compare the notes on Matthew 14:26).
