"Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire." — Matthew 7:19 (ASV)

Every tree that does not bear good fruit—The crowds who listened must, for the most part, have recognized the words as those they had heard before from the lips of the Baptist, and they served accordingly as a link connecting the teaching of our Lord with that of the forerunner .
