Charles Ellicott Commentary Numbers 13:29

"Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan." — Numbers 13:29 (ASV)

The land of the south.— It is better understood as the south country, or the Negeb. See Genesis 36:12, and also Numbers 13:17 (from this book of Numbers) and the note on that verse.
