Proverbs 12

1819–1905

Verse 1

"Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge; But he that hateth reproof is brutish." — Proverbs 12:1 (ASV)

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge. —Rather, he who loves knowledge loves discipline, that is, to put himself in the place of a learner; while “he that hateth reproof,” who will not take advice, is “brutish,” “nourishing a blind life within the brain,” like the animals who are incapable of improvement.

Verse 2

"A good man shall obtain favor of Jehovah; But a man of wicked devices will he condemn." — Proverbs 12:2 (ASV)

A good man. — The corresponding phrase, “a man of wicked devices,” that is, who plots against his neighbor, fixes the sense of “good” as signifying “benevolent” ; and for the sentiment, Luke 6:35.

Verse 4

"A worthy woman is the crown of her husband; But she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones." — Proverbs 12:4 (ASV)

A virtuous woman. —Literally, of power, that is, of ability and character, like the wife described in Proverbs 31:10, or the “able” men of Exodus 18:21.

Verse 5

"The thoughts of the righteous are just; [But] the counsels of the wicked are deceit." — Proverbs 12:5 (ASV)

The thoughts of the righteous are right.— Or, justice. .

Verse 6

"The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood; But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them." — Proverbs 12:6 (ASV)

The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood — that is, are calculated for this end.

The mouth of the upright shall deliver them — that is, those for whom the wicked lie in wait.
