Verse 1

"Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise." — Proverbs 20:1 (ASV)

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is ragingthat is, producing these effects in those who subject themselves to their power.

Verse 2

"The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life." — Proverbs 20:2 (ASV)

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion, that is, the dread which he casts upon others when he is becoming angry is a warning of approaching danger.

Sinneth against his own soul that is, against his own life.

Verse 3

"It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling." — Proverbs 20:3 (ASV)

But every fool.— Self-willed person. (Compare to Proverbs 1:22.)

Will be meddling.—Or, rather, showing his teeth: thinking that his own personal dignity is at stake.

Verse 5

"Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out." — Proverbs 20:5 (ASV)

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water. —The wise thoughts of a "man," appropriately so-called , may be hidden deep in his breast, like the waters of a well, but a man of understanding knows how to draw them out as with a windlass and bucket (Exodus 2:16).

Verse 6

"Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?" — Proverbs 20:6 (ASV)

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness. Will be full of his benevolent intentions, “but a faithful man,” who carries out these promises, “who can find?
