Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation; And thy right hand hath holden me up, And thy gentleness hath made me great." — Psalms 18:35 (ASV)
Your gentleness. —Or, meekness, as in the margin. We cannot afford to sacrifice this striking foreshadowing of His own words, “I am meek and lowly,” to the fear of a word like anthropomorphism. Why be afraid to speak of the Divine Being as meek any more than as jealous? The Septuagint and Vulgate have “discipline,” probably through this timidity.
