"Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary; And they that hate us take spoil for themselves." — Psalms 44:10 (ASV)

For themselves — that is, at their own will, an expression denoting the completeness of the overthrow of the Jews; they lie absolutely at their enemies’ pleasure.
