Psalms 54

1819–1905
Anglican
Verse 1

"Save me, O God, by thy name, And judge me in thy might." — Psalms 54:1 (ASV)

By your name. —See Note, Psalms 20:1. (Compare to Isaiah 30:27.)

Judge me by your strengthi.e., in Your power see that justice is done to me.

Verse 3

"For strangers are risen up against me, And violent men have sought after my soul: They have not set God before them. Selah" — Psalms 54:3 (ASV)

For strangers. —This verse, with some variations, occurs again (Psalms 86:14); some manuscripts even reading here “proud,” instead of “strangers.” With the received reading, we must understand the word as “foreign oppressors”—though, doubtless, the inscription of the Psalm may be defended by taking the word in a derived sense of those Israelites who have degenerated, and so deserve the name “aliens.”

Verse 4

"Behold, God is my helper: The Lord is of them that uphold my soul." — Psalms 54:4 (ASV)

With them ... —Better, is a supporter of my life. So Septuagint and Vulgate.

Verse 5

"He will requite the evil unto mine enemies: Destroy thou them in thy truth." — Psalms 54:5 (ASV)

Cut them off. —Or, put them to silence.

In your truth. —Or, according to your faithfulness.

Verse 6

"With a freewill-offering will I sacrifice unto thee: I will give thanks unto thy name, O Jehovah, for it is good." — Psalms 54:6 (ASV)

I will freely sacrifice. —Better, I will offer a willing (or freewill) sacrifice.

For it is good. —Compare Psalms 52:9.
