Charles Ellicott Commentary

Charles Ellicott Commentary
"God be merciful unto us, and bless us, [And] cause his face to shine upon us; Selah" — Psalms 67:1 (ASV)
This verse is an adaptation of the priestly benediction (Numbers 6:24–26).
Upon us. —Rather, with, or among us; a variation from the formal benediction.
"That thy way may be known upon earth, Thy salvation among all nations." — Psalms 67:2 (ASV)
Saving health. —The Hebrew word is that generally rendered “salvation,” but often better rendered “help,” or “deliverance.” By “health” the translators meant “healing power,” as in Shakespeare, King John, Act V, Scene 2:—
“For the health and medicine of our right.”
"Let the peoples praise thee, O God; Let all the peoples praise thee." — Psalms 67:3 (ASV)
Praise. —Better, give thanks.
"Oh let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For thou wilt judge the peoples with equity, And govern the nations upon earth. Selah" — Psalms 67:4 (ASV)
For you will judge: —Better, for you judge.
And govern... —Better, and you lead. The word is used in Psalms 23:3 of the “pastoral” care of God.
"The earth hath yielded its increase: God, even our own God, will bless us." — Psalms 67:6 (ASV)
Then shall the earth yield her increase. —It seems more in keeping with the expression of thanks to render here with the Septuagint and Vulgate, “The land hath yielded her increase.”
