"They have set thy sanctuary on fire; They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name [by casting it] to the ground." — Psalms 74:7 (ASV)

They have cast fire into. —Literally, They have cast into fire your sanctuary. This is probably a hyperbolic expression, intending to convey the vastness of the conflagration. Others compare it with the English phrase “set on fire,” and the French mettre à feu.

We learn from 1 Maccabees 4:38 and Josephus, Antiquities 12.7.6, that Judas Maccabeus, when he came to restore the Temple, found that the gates had been burned.
