Psalms 98

1819–1905

Verse 1

"Oh sing unto Jehovah a new song; For he hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and his holy arm, hath wrought salvation for him." — Psalms 98:1 (ASV)

Victory. —The word more commonly rendered “salvation,” as, indeed, in the next verse.

Verse 4

"Make a joyful noise unto Jehovah, all the earth: Break forth and sing for joy, yea, sing praises." — Psalms 98:4 (ASV)

Make a joyful noise. —Better, Break out into songs and music.

Verse 5

"Sing praises unto Jehovah with the harp; With the harp and the voice of melody." — Psalms 98:5 (ASV)

Sing ... —Rather, Play to Jehovah on a harp, on a harp, and with melodious sound of music.

Verse 6

"With trumpets and sound of cornet Make a joyful noise before the King, Jehovah." — Psalms 98:6 (ASV)

Trumpets ... cornet. —(Exodus 19:16; and Bible Educator, ii. 231, 232.) This is the only place in the psalm where the chatsotsereh, or “straight trumpet” is mentioned.

Verse 7

"Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein;" — Psalms 98:7 (ASV)

See Psalms 96:11.

“Listen! the mighty Being is awake
And does with His eternal motion make
A sound like thunder everlastingly.”
WORDSWORTH.
