Charles Ellicott Commentary
"The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh, Leaping upon the mountains, Skipping upon the hills." — Song Of Solomon 2:8 (ASV)
The voice of my beloved. — So here, there is no need for the clumsy device of supposing the heroine is in a dream. This most exquisite portion of the whole poem falls quite naturally into place if we regard it as the poet's sweet recollection, put into the mouth of the object of his affections. "The voice" (Hebrew, kôl), used to arrest attention, means "Listen!" . The keen sense of love discerns his approach from a long way off. (Compare—
“Before he mounts the hill, I know
He comes quickly.”—Tennyson’s Fatima.)
