"And I took my staff Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples." — Zechariah 11:10 (ASV)
The people rejected Him; therefore He broke His staff “Favour,” and so annulled the covenant He had made with the nations on behalf of His people. This was fulfilled at the close of the glorious Maccabean period, when the nation became corrupted, and as a consequence was harassed by the nations on every side. This verse is the converse of Ezekiel 34:25-28.
People. —Better, nations. (Compare to Zechariah 12:6.)
