Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"Beloved, no new commandment write I unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning: the old commandment is the word which ye heard. Again, a new commandment write I unto you, which thing is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shineth. He that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother, is in the darkness even until now." — 1 John 2:7-9 (ASV)
Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you have heard from the beginning.
Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines. He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness even until now.
Love is the true test of light, that light which leads us to love God, to love Christ, to love the truth, to love God's people, yes, and to love the whole world of men for their good; this is the love that attests the light we have to be the very light of God.
