Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee." — 1 Kings 17:8-9 (ASV)
It was a time of famine, yet God sent him to a widow!
She surely needed sustenance herself; yes, and she would receive it too, by sustaining the prophet, for He who could command the ravens to feed His servant could also command a widow to do the same thing, and He did so. This woman did not appear to have been originally a worshipper of Jehovah. She lived in a heathen country and was probably a heathen herself; but she revered the servant of Jehovah, followed his instructions, and undoubtedly became a true follower of the living God.
