SCRIPTURE

"And when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he stood in awe of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them." — 1 Samuel 18:15-16 (ASV)

This love of the people only caused Saul's hatred of David to become even more excessive; but Jonathan still loved David and promised to remain loyal to him, whatever might happen. In 1 Samuel 20, we can read still more about this faithful friendship.
