SCRIPTURE

"For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of Jehovah, and out of the house of the king and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but it helped him not. And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against Jehovah, this same king Ahaz." — 2 Chronicles 28:21-22 (ASV)

A black mark is put against his name, to show how greatly guilty he was. Those who rebel against divine checks, and will not be restrained by the providence of God, are to be written down in capital letters as great sinners. They sin with emphasis who sin against the chastising rod.
