Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"But as ye abound in everything, [in] faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and [in] all earnestness, and [in] your love to us, [see] that ye abound in this grace also." — 2 Corinthians 8:7 (ASV)
Therefore, as you abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that you abound to this grace also.
These Corinthians were an instructed people. They were so well taught that they were able to carry on open meetings for years without a minister. However, the natural consequences followed: they fell into sixes and seven, and divisions arose among them, so Paul had to counsel them to have a minister, writing: "I beseech you, brethren, you know the house of Stephanas that it is the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints, that you submit yourselves to such, and to everyone that helps with us and labors."
They were a notable church, with people of standing among them. Paul acknowledged all that, but he said, "Do not be behind in your liberality to the cause of God."
