Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"and their word will eat as doth a gangrene: or whom is Hymenaeus an Philetus; men who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some. Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness." — 2 Timothy 2:17-19 (ASV)
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.
How careful the apostle is, lest we think that any who were the Lord's people have turned aside. He says the faith of some was overthrown, but nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure. Oh, brothers, whenever we see apparent apostasy, let us not therefore think that any of God's people have perished. Oh, no. For The Lord knoweth them that are his.
