SCRIPTURE

"and after these things he gave [them] judges until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they asked for a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for the space of forty years." — Acts 13:20-21 (ASV)

And after that he gave to them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they desired a king:

This was another instance of wantonness on the Israelites' part.

God was their King, yet they insisted on having a visible king, like the other nations by which they were surrounded. They were faithfully warned by the prophet Samuel of the evil consequences that would follow their choice, but they would not be content with their God as their only Ruler: afterward they desired a king.
