"But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, [saying], Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear unto my words. For these are not drunken, as ye suppose; seeing it is [but] the third hour of the day." — Acts 2:14-15 (ASV)

But, Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, You men of Judaea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: for these are not drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

"It is only nine o'clock in the morning; you cannot really imagine that these men are drunk." We might have thought it hardly worthwhile to take notice of such an observation; but Peter knew how to conciliate the crowd, and to meet them upon their own ground.
