SCRIPTURE

"who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end: and [lest] thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth." — Deuteronomy 8:16-17 (ASV)

Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers knew not, that He might humble you, and that He might test you, to do you good at your latter end; and you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.

We must not say this either about temporal or spiritual wealth. If we have grown in grace, and have become useful, and are spiritually a blessing to others, we must not take any credit for it to ourselves; or else down we shall go before long. God did not enrich you that you might set yourself up as a god in opposition to Him. Christ did not love you that you might make yourself a rival to Him. Oh, that must not be! We must never say in our heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.
