Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed." — Genesis 32:28 (ASV)
And he said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel:
That is, a prince of God.
But Israel: –
A prince of God; –
For as a prince hast thou power with God and with men and hast prevailed.
Jacob was the prince with the disjointed limb, and that is exactly what a Christian is. He wins, he conquers, when his weakness becomes supreme, and he is conscious of it.
And he said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel:
"A prince of God."
