"For therein the elders had witness borne to them." — Hebrews 11:2 (ASV)

For by it the elders obtained a good report,

Those who lived in former times gained fame and glory from God himself by faith.

For by it the elders obtained a good report.

All the godly of ancient times had a good report from God and from holy men as the result of their faith.

For by it the elders obtained a good report.

It is noteworthy that they obtained this "good report" by their faith. Doubt gives a man an evil reputation; it is only believers who obtain such a "report" as even the Holy Spirit describes as "good."
