"Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tried [me] by proving [me,] And saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do always err in their heart: But they did not know my ways;" — Hebrews 3:7-10 (ASV)

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost says, Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

Do not provoke your God by your quibbling, or your murmuring, or your idolatry; do not act as those unbelievers did who died in the wilderness.
