"Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander to the peoples." — Isaiah 55:3-4 (ASV)

Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.

These words refer not only to David, but to Jesus, great David's greater Son. The next verse is spoken specially to him, not to us, yet as we overhear it, we draw comfort for ourselves from it.

Even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him –

The Son of David – "great David's greater Son" – and God's own well-beloved and only-begotten Son, even Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. God says I have given him
