Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, [and] himself fought against them." — Isaiah 63:10 (ASV)
But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
This was a great change in dispensation, though there was no change in the heart of God. He deals roughly with his people when they rebel against him. They would not be improved by tenderness, so now they must be scourged by his rod, and come under his displeasure. When men turn from God, he is turned to be their enemy.
But they rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit; therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
Hear this, you people of God! This is what God will do to you if you rebel against Him, and grieve His Holy Spirit; He will turn to be your enemy, and He will fight against you. If God's people will not yield to His love and His pity, they must suffer from His hand and His rod.
