"He hath stripped me of my glory, And taken the crown from my head. He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone; And my hope hath he plucked up like a tree." — Job 19:9-10 (ASV)

That is, torn up by the roots and carried down the stream, to be forgotten by the people who once knew it and rejoiced in its welcome shade.
