Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God." — John 1:33-34 (ASV)
But he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw and bare record, that this is the Son of God.
Notice how very clear John is. There is no mistaking him. He repeated himself to prevent any possibility of error, and he provides the details of the method by which he recognized the Savior, so that all might be persuaded to accept Jesus as truly the Messiah and the Son of God.
Therefore, we are to preach very plainly—not with enticing words of men's wisdom, but with demonstration of the Spirit and with power. What have we to conceal? No, we have everything to reveal. Our task is that people should be convinced that Jesus is the Christ, and should come and put their trust in Him.
