SCRIPTURE

"Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him." — John 11:9-10 (ASV)

If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

There is a singular turn, is there not, in that expression? We expected it to be "Because he does not see the light of the world," instead of which the Saviour says, Because there is no light in him — because in spiritual things our light not only comes from above, but it shines within; and without that inner light we are sure to stumble.
