Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"Now this he said, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the bag took away what was put therein." — John 12:6 (ASV)
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. (John 12:4–6)
Judas's question was a most unworthy one, but the motive that prompted it was worse still. Little did he care for the poor; but if he could have had the selling of that very costly spikenard ointment, he would have used that as an opportunity to enrich himself.
