Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"When therefore he said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground." — John 18:6 (ASV)
As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
The simple utterance of his name drove them from him, and struck them to the earth; what would have happened if he had put forth his almighty power?
As soon then as he said to them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Christ's almighty power cast them down at once. He did not need to lift his hand or even his finger; he only said, I am, and they went backward, and fell to the ground.
