Charles Spurgeon Commentary John 19:20

"This title therefore read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, [and] in Latin, [and] in Greek." — John 19:20 (ASV)

This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

So that everyone could read it, for some one or other of these languages would be known to everyone in the crowd; they were not dead languages then as they are now.
