Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And when evening came, his disciples went down unto the sea; and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. And the sea was rising by reason of a great wind that blew. When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the boat: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat: and straightway the boat was at the land whither they were going. On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save one, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the boat, but [that] his disciples went away alone (howbeit there came boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks): when the multitude therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled." — John 6:16-26 (ASV)
And when evening was now come, his disciples went down to the sea, and entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
And the sea arose because of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the ship and they were afraid. But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. Then they willingly received him into the ship, and immediately the ship was at the land where they went. The next day, when the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one into which his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone (however, other boats came from Tiberias near to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks), when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also boarded ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.
How faithful and truthful the Master was! There was in him nothing of the calculated concealment of his knowledge, and the endeavor to please everybody, which we see in so many. He speaks the truth whether it offends or pleases his hearers, and so should his servants do. He said, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.
