Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven." — John 6:30-32 (ASV)
They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
Jesus did not say to them, "I gave that bread to your fathers in the wilderness," as he might truly have said. It was not Moses who fed their fathers in the wilderness; it was God who had fed them, and if they would only think, they would clearly see that it was so.
But the Master changed His approach and led their thoughts to a higher topic.
