Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" — John 7:41-42 (ASV)
But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
This was blessed testimony even out of the mouth of Christ's enemies. They objected against Christ what was indeed the fact, for he did come of the seed of David, and from the town of Bethlehem.
He was born there; and though they called him the Nazarene—and he did not refuse the title—though over his head Pilate wrote, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews," yet he is the Son of David, and his birthplace was at Bethlehem, though some of them did not know it.
