Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"As he spake these things, many believed on him. Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, [then] are ye truly my disciples; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." — John 8:30-32 (ASV)
As he spoke these words, many believed on him. Then Jesus said to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
There is such a thing as a temporary faith; beware of it, I urge you. Men appear to believe in Christ for a little while, like that seed which was sown upon the rock, which speedily sprang up, and just as quickly withered away. God-given faith is not temporary, but permanent: If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed. God gives us the faith which is able to endure the fire of persecution, and which continues steadfast even when exposed to the evil example of an ungodly world. He that endures to the end shall be saved; but temporary faith brings only delusion, and ends in destruction.
