Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers." — Luke 11:46 (ASV)
Their regulations regarding moral and ceremonial observances were like huge, unwieldy bundles or crushing burdens bound together, and made into a weight intolerable for any person to carry. Many of these rules by themselves were grievous enough; but altogether they formed a yoke that neither the people nor their ancestors could bear. The scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers piled the great load on them; but neither helped them to sustain it, nor offered to relieve them of any part of it. You lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
