SCRIPTURE

"But he said unto him, A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many: and he sent forth his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for [all] things are now ready." — Luke 14:16-17 (ASV)

A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: and sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

They had accepted the invitation, so they were pledged to be present but, in the meantime, they had changed their minds regarding their intended host, and they were unwilling to grace his feast.
