Charles Spurgeon Commentary

Charles Spurgeon Commentary
"And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine." — Luke 15:14-15 (ASV)
And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
This was a very degrading employment for him as a Jew. Perhaps, however, it was the best that the citizen of that country could do for him, because there was a famine in the land. When men are all pinched with hunger, there is not much that one can do for another.
And what can one poor sinner do for another? Even though he is called a priest and puts on fine apparel, yet what can he do for his fellow sinner?
