"And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, offering him vinegar, and saying, If thou art the King of the Jews, save thyself." — Luke 23:36-37 (ASV)

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, and saying, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

These rough legionaries knew how to put their jests in the most cruel shape, and to press home their scoffs upon their suffering victim.
